EXTRAVAGANT ROADING
Sir, —Tho strong criticism of the Public Works Department by the Hokianga County Council in the Herald of July 18 is very thoroughly justified and yet is a mere bagatelle when taken with the numerous similar and greater extravagant expenditures and terrific waste of this department throughout New Zealand. This calls for the immediate setting up of a commission of inquiry concerning the operations of this menace to the country's welfare. Owing to the close connection between the Public Works Department and the local bodies, it is rare that anyone connected with the operations will dare to raise a voice in protest. Mr. Yarborough is doing a real service to the community in bringing before public notico a matter which is causing great concern to those who are witness to the ruthless extravagance and colossal waste of money by the Public Works Department. I commend the attention of chambers of commerce throughout tho country to the urgent need of putting a stop to this wild orgy of useless spending. Sea Williams.
