DOMINION REGISTRATIONS LITTLE INCREASE SHOWN TOTAL NUMBER NOW 55,20* [by TELEGRAPH —riIESS association] \V 13LL1NO TOX, Thursday An increase of 57 in the registered number of unemployed throughout New Zealand is recorded in tho figures for the week ended July 25, released by the acting-Minister of Employment, the Hon. A. Hamilton, to-day. Tho total number on the books of the Labour Bureaux was 55,203, compared with 55,1.46 in the proceding week. Of tho total number of registered unemployed, 43,631 were engaged under tho No. 5 rolicf schento. There wore J 1,572 unplaced or standing down. In tho previous week thero was an increase of 47 in tho registered number of unemployed compared with the figures for tho seven days before. Of the total, 30,520 wcro engaged under tho No. 5 relief scheme, leaving 15,626 standing down or unplaced.

OTAHUHU WELFARE WORK j ACTIVITIES OF THE LEAGUE Reports from tho various committees of tho Otahuhu Welfare League on their activities were presented at tho monthly meeting on Wednesday evening. Ihe Mayor, Mr. 11. T. Clements, presided. It was reported that in the last eight weeks the sum of £B4 had been spent in supplying cheap meat through tho supplies depot. After paying all expenses there was a small cash balance in hand. Seventy pairs of boots had been issued at under cost price, the league contributing 2s 6d on each pair. Singlets, denims and socks were also being supplied. Twenty-two families had been supplied with groceries and fuel. "DRIVES" ORGANISED THREE SUBURBAN EFFORTS A "drive' to obtain work of any description as well as clothing and blankets will be held by members of tho One Tree Hill Workers' Association to-morrow. Work such as gardening, ground improvements, painting, carpentry or plumbing would bo appreciated. A clothes "drive" will also be. conducted to-morrow in the Remuera district by the Auckland Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association, proceeds of which will bo devoted to the Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Fund. A " drive" will bo conducted in the Mount Eden district to-morrow by the local branch of the Metropolitan Reliof • Association. Tho district has been divided into 16 zones, and a thorough house-to-houso canvass will be made. RELIEF WORKERS' WIVES APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE [by TELEGRAPH—PRESS association] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday As a result of a large number of wives of unemployed workers waiting on its benevolent committee, tho hospital board to-day sent tho following telegram to the Unemployment Board:— " A largo number of wives of relief workers, some of them expectant mothers, are applying here, stating that they havo no food in their houses. Your officer will not help. He also declines to meet this board's committee to discuss the matter. What is to bo done? "
