new zealanders' doings SUSPENSION OF T. WEBSTER DEFEAT OF KING MARCH [FROM oun OWN CORRESPONDENT] SYDNEY, July 21 Although they did not win any races, New Zoalanders wero well in tho limelight at Rosehill on Saturday. A plunge 011 King March in tho principal handicap camo undone when ho finished second to Salvador. 1. "Webster caught a month's suspension for causing interference on Brazenfaco. and H. B. Lorigan and R. Reed had to explain to tho stewards why Lavington ran so badly in tho Maiden Handicap. This tlicy did to complete, official satisfaction. While King March in tho 11-furlongs handicap with 9.0 appeared to have at least 141b. too much judged on his New Zealand form, J. T. Jamieson was confident ot liis success. J. Pike was in tho 6addle and a very short prico was on offer at the close of betting. King March had every chance, but was soundly beaten by Eurythmic'a four-year-old lialf-brothcr Salvador, an -unreliable iustomer, who has promise'd to do great things, but has seldom raced up to expectations. Young Webster received his month, according to his father, for telling tho truth. Ho admitted to tho stewards that ho had caused somo troublo in tho Flying Handicap, but it was unintentional. Tho stewards' report suggested that for his frankness Webster was let down lightly with one month's suspension. Lavington carried top weight, 9.5, in tho milo and a-quarter Maiden Handicap, conceding weight all round. He was solidly supported, but was nevor going right and was beaten a long way from homo. Reed did not punch him out in tho straight, a fact which no doubt prompted the inquiry. Lavington was well beaten at the timo and under tho extremo prcsauro would not have gained a jjlaco. • C. Emerson has started to send liis team along at Randwick. He is handicapped rather by lack of cuitablo races for Concentrate, as tho old fellow has done so woll that ho is decidedly jolly. Ho workod a solid five furlongs with Early Cup on Tuesday. Oratorian and Oratorious also sprinted well. To-day Concentrate and Oratorian worked well over a milo and half a milo. Early Cup is to open for tho team at Warwick Farm next Saturday. Historic, Might and Forestry had an excellent trip across tho Tasmaji- Historic travelled particularly well, but the other pair lightened up a trifle. They were out for exorcise at Randwick this morning, all attracting favourable attention. Timorous, with 6.13, was tried among the open sprinters at Rosehill on Saturday. She was fairly prominent but really did not look like winning at any stage. Sho is small and will bo hard to place from now on. Cockpcn struck troublo in the two-year-old race at Rosehill on Saturday and finished up in last place. Ho ran very wide at tho turn, but his display was entirely disappointing. His stable mate, Waratah. who was handicapped equal to open winners in tho Carlingford Handicap, showed up for a few furlongs and then petered right out. He has worked smartly this P. Riddle, undismayed by his misfortunes, went for a plunge on Celebrate at Rosehill on Saturday and succeeded by a narrow margin. Celebrate had to be desperately ridden and just got home. Mr. J. Richardson and D. Wilson spent a few days hero on their way from Melbourne to Now Zealand. The former stated that tho rough and long sea trip was too much for Captain's Gift. The liotbq wasjust beginning to come right when ho raced at Caulfield Inst Saturday, and had he stayed on would certainly havo won a race. Captain's Gift is roturning direct to New Zealand from Melbourne this week. NEW ZEALAND HORSES ARRIVAL AT SYDNEY (Received July 26, 7.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 26 Seven New Zealand racehorses wero landed from tho Zealandia to-day in good condition, namely, Peter Jack9on, Gaino Carrmgton, Sunny Sky, Inflation, Splutter, Horowhenua and Manawhenua. Tho two lastnamed are going to Melbourne. NEW ZEALAND JUMPERS STAY IN MELBOURNE LIKELY [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] SYDNEY. July 21 Copcy, after fulfilling his engagement in tho Australian Steeplechase at Caulfield, w to bo given a short spell in Melbourne. Copey will then l>e prepared for the steeplechaises at tho Melbourne Cup meeting. I Tucker, who rides Copey, hns attracted favourable attention in Melbourne and intends to stay on thcro for some months. It opportunities warrant it, he will reside in Melbourne permanently. / T. R. George, although Make Up and Landmark disappointed him. has fallen under the Australian lure and he has hopes ot bringing (he remainder of his team to Melbourne. Appledore gave him a good etl irt and he must have expected the failures of the other pair. wLo were very tired horses before they laced. M. McCARTEN RIDING AGAIN SUCCESS ON BRONZE HAWK [from OUR OWN correspondent] SYDNEY, July 21 M. McCarten resumed race-riding at Rosehill on Saturday, and went within inches of winning with his second mount Ilavaspot. Earlier in tho day 110 had been unplaced on Lctitia. . , Havaspot was top-weight with 10.1 in ttie Carlingford Handicap. Ho ran tip <o the lenders with caHo a furlong from bomo, the raco looked over. 'I he last uOyds. hu\ him stopping under his big weight, and finally Celebrate headed him on the post. Havaspot was at a great double-figure price, nnd on an each-way basis his connections showed a profit, even if the wm was not nearly as pood ns it would have been had Havaspot succeeded. At Menangle on lucsday McCarten opened his winning account on the smart Brazen two-year-old, 'Bronze Hawk. 110 also had a second on the odds-on favourite, Queen Sol. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP There aro flattering reports concerning Valicare's son (by Night Raid), who will be a yearling next month. lie is a bay, with plenty of body, and is after the stylo of Nightmarch. It is said that it would be difficult to find a better stamp of youngster of the same ago. If Night Raid is to sire another champion it should bo this fellfw, who, on breeding, _ should combine sprinting, and staying ability. First place in this year's English Derby carried £9730 ss, and £SOO forthobrceder of tho winner; second, £llsO 10s and third, £578 ss; making a total of £11,405. Of that amount £UOOO wns added money. Tho second now gets 10 per cent and the third 5 per cent of the wholo stake, whereas a few years ago there was only £4OO for second, and £2OO for third, which wero absurdly small sums by comparison with first money. B Rosen, who rodo a couple of winners in Franco shortly after his arrival from India, accepted a retainer from Mr. Leon Voltcrra in May. Rosen will consequently remain in France until tho conclusion of tho current season, and the chances aro ho will then tako another trip to India. One of the biggest horses in training in 'Auckland is tho rising four-year-old gelding Demylus, by Polymcstor from Ottawa. As a yearling Demylus was purchased in Australia by J. Williamson, and, after being broken in, was turned out. A short time back he was placed in regular work,. and ho acquitted himself well for a beginner when sprinted half a milo on Saturday.
