OPPOSITION TO PROPOSALS NO AGREEMENT REACHED [by TELEGRAFH —rRESS association] WELLINGTON, Tuesday The Wellington butchers' dispute war heard in conciliation council to-day before Mr. W. Newton. It appeared from the initial remarks that the employers have altered their original proposals and the question was raised whether fresh proceedings should be commenced. Mr. Newton said that, if the amended proposals of the employers could .not be discussed, the employers would be in order in saying that an agreement could not be reached. It was stated in reply that if it was hoped to reach an agreement 011 the employers' proposals, it might as well be realised that that was impossible. 'lf that is your best offer," said Mr. A. Croskerv, representing the workers, "we are not accepting it. There aro other means of getting it." No agreement was reached between 110 parties, and the position now is that tho award will expire one month from the date on which notification of the failure to agree is sent by tho Conciliation Commissioner to the Clerk of Awards. The employers proposed varying, reductions in wages, instances being:—First shopman, £5 17s 6d to £5 7s 6d; other workers, £4 16s to £4 7e fed; youths up to 36 years, 30s to 17s 6d.
