BOWLING NOTES.

WINTER TOURNAMENTS.

SELECTING CLUB RINKS.

BY SKIP.

Winter green bowlers have not enjoyed good conditions so far this year, but the usual hopes are entertained for better weather later on. The Mount Albert Bowling Club continues to hold its series of successful tourneys on week' days, and last week's event was most enjoyable. Much of the success of this particular event was duo to the splendid order of the green and very favourable comment was passed upon its 'fine playing qualities by the successful Ponsonby skip, A. Parsons.

The question of the rink to represent the club in the champion rink contest in January was brought up at the annual meeting of the Auckland Bowling Club. The mover of the motion, which was eventually carried, sought to condemn the customary elimination contest, which the club has hitherto used to find the representative rink. The new legislation provides for the selection of the skip by the match committee and after a conference with that person the committee will proceed to find the best combination. Much argument has already centred round this question. The team which proves its right in actual contest is deserving of the honour just as much as or probably more than a specially-selected rink. However, a change to the direction noted can do no harm and will possibly please at least a percentage of the members. The only departure from tho routine business at the recent meeting of the New Zealand Council in Wellington was the decision to have only three bowl pairs. This was the outcome of a remit from Wellington and; as was generally anticipated, the proposal found enough favour to bo given a trial for one tournament at least. Time alone will tell if the innovation will be a success. Locally, opinion appears to be very divided on the subject, there being many who frankly disapprove of the alteration. Again, as was anticipated, the question of two games of 25 heads was carried. It is said' that the playing of two games instead of -three is in favour of the visitors. If that is bo, then some would-be visitors will not put in an appearance at all, purely on tho grounds of waste of time. Again, the Dominion tournaments of late years have' really become glorified centre events, since the home town supplies tho bulk of the entries. Tt will be interesting, therefore, to see what procedure will be adopted when the tournament comes to Auckland, in view of the large local entry for this event.
