WAIKATO DIOCESAN SYNOD.

MISSIONARY WORK REPORT. (

The Waikato Diocesan Synod continued its session to-day. Bishop Cherrington. presided. A remit from the Pensions Board that' the board's fire insurance business bo wound up and that the accumulated funds bo transferred to a trust account was approved. The Standing Committee reported that substantial grants had been made to the maintenance of backblock parishes. Friends in England had, subscribed £l3O toward the Waikato Diocesan Backblock Fund. About £BOO was required annually to maintain tho fund. Five priests and four women workers were giving splendid service in connection with Maori missions in the diocese. Generous donations Kad been received by the mission, and' a Maori church had been opened at Paeroa. Five free places had been obtained for Waikato Maori boys at St. Stephen's School. It was proposed fS set up a new board of control. in connection with St.' Stephen's School with representatives from the Waikato. The income from the Waikato trusts would for years to.comß. be used for St. Stephen's School and Queen 'Victoria College. Concluding, the committee reported that the diocesa had lived well within its income during the year. Diocesan indebtedness had been reduced from £2BOO to £322 during the past, three years, and parishes were also making strong efforts to clear off their debts.] The capital funds of the diocese had increased by £654, and now stood afc £33,754. " . .. • Mr. W. Stopford proposed a resolution asking synod to direct the Diocesan Trust Board to vest the title of the section on which the Cambridge Parish HaU stands in trustees for the purpose of enabling them to raise a mortgage to pay off the balance of the money due on the building. Mr Stopford said when the building was mooted, most of the required money was promised, but many people had been unable to keep their promises. The building cost £2280, and thero was a deficiency of £594. The matter was referred. to the Lands and Buildings v Com-i mittee for a report. A report on the work of the Diocesan Missionary Committee was submitted by. Canon H. R. B. -Gillespie, of Moronsville. He said missionary boxes had been distributed among parishioners and this work was being pursued.' The commi.tee recommended that the boxes snou bo opened regularly and frequently. An amendment to a statute giving eac synod the resolution to reduce the number of the Standing Commi tee from 19 to not fewer than nine, was. proposed by Mr. W. F. _ Kent-Johnston, and passed. It was decided to nx number of the Standing Committee at live clergy and tho bishop, and seven laymen.
