VICE-REGAL VISITS PAID.

TWO ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOMES.

SACRED HEART AND ST. MARY'S

Warm welcomes were extended to the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and tlic Lady Bledisloe yesterday morning when Their Excellencies paid visits to the Sacred Heart Collego and St. Mary's College. Boys were lining both sides of the drive when the Vice-Regal party arrived at Sacred Heart College, and the school cadets formed a guard of honour in front of the main building. Three cheers greeted Their Excllencies on arrival and the National Anthem was sung. Bishop Liston and Brother Benignus, director of the college, received the visitors, to whom the Marist Brothers were subsequently presented. Their Excellencies made a thorough inspection of the classrooms and dormitories. From a balcony, decorated with the Union Jack, tho New Zealand Ensign and the Papal colours, Lord Bledisloe later addressed the pupils. A welcome on bohalf of the school was extended by the liead prefect, Ronald Mac Donald, who presented to His Excellency a bound copy of the school magazine. A bouquet was presented to the Lady Bledisloe by John Dunh, one of tho younger pupils. True Christian Training.

In a speech of welcome Bishop Liston said tho aim of the collego was to give the boys a true Christian training. It was a collego for New Zealaiiders and was taught by New Zealanders. His appreciation of the importance of religious instruction was acknowledged by His Excellency in replying. He thanked the college for its splendid welcome, and congratulated it on its excellent provision for instruction. JIo was also impressed with its domestic comfort. Tho offer of a copy of an historic picture in tho college, depicting tho signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, was made by Mr. C. A. Sneddon, president of the Old Boys' Association, and was accepted with thanks by His Excellency. The picture will bo placed in the old residency at Waitangi, recently purchased by Their Excellencies and presented to tho nation. A welcome, equally as enthusiastic awaited Their Excellencies at St. Mary's College. The elder pupils lined tho drive, every sixth pupil carrying a golden wand, to which tiio school colours, blue and white, were attached. Tho other pupils wero drawn up on the quadrangle. A banner, bearing tho word "Wolcomo," was suspended above the drive. Bouquet and a Kiss.

Their Excellencies "were received by Mother Superior Margaret May, who presented the nuns to them. After the singing of the National Anthem tho head prefect, Myra Kemble, extended a welcome on behalf of the pupils, and Josephine O'Malley presented a bouquet to Her Excellency, being rewarded with a kiss. Proof of the excellent musical training given ab the college was supplied in tho singing of "Cast Thy Burden" by Irma Kitchin and Marie Delaney, and a threepart harmonised chorus by tho rest of tho pupils. Tho chorus was conducted by Joan Kiely. Tho beautiful environment of the college was praised by His Excellency, who also commended tho excellent work being done by tho Mother Superior and the nuns.

The singing of the Now Zealand National Anthem concluded a very happy gathering.
