DRIVERS' LICENCES.
THE ANNUAL INSPECTION. HUNDREDS OF CARS STOPPED. The annual inspection by local authorities to detect any motorists who may be without driving licences for the current year was carried out in the city and suburbs yesterday. Traffic officers attached to the various' local bodies were stationed at the principal intersections, and every motor-vehicle that passed was stopped while the driver produced either his licence or an excuse.
As was the case last year, the "drive" was carried out in the city and in suburban districts on the same day, by arrangement between the various traffic departments. Twenty-eight, of the Auckland City Council's inspectors were.engaged in the work, while the suburban officers wero also busy. In the areas where Sunday traffic is usually heavy, three or four inspectors were stationed at an intersection, so that there should be a minimum of delay.
As each car was examined a yellow "sticker" was affixed to the windscreen in order that the driver should not have to stop again at other traps he niight encounter in the afternoon's run. Drivers who had no licences or had left them at home, received a ticket notifying them, to report to-day at the office of the local authority conerned. Although in most, instances drivers were able to produce their current licences, a number could not. Drivers were supposed to have renewed their licences by June 1, the authorities allowing a month to elapse before holding the annual inspection.
