HOTEL SAFE RIFLED.
DARING WANGANUI BURGLARY SUM OF OVER £IOO STOLEN. KEYS TAKEN FROM BEDROOM. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] "WANGANUI. Sunday. The safe of the Federal Hotel was rifled early this morning, silver and notes amounting to considerably over £IOO being taken. A bunch of keys was stolen from the bedroom of the proprietress, Mrs. M. Bethune, while she was asleep. A man hid under her bed, presumably before 10 o'clock on Saturday night, and saw her place the keys under a cushion. When she was asleep tho man took the keys, unlocked the bedroom door and let himself out. He had easy access to the office and safe on the ground floor. When tho porter came on duty this morning ho found the front and office doors open, the safe door ajar, and all the eash gone. Mrs. Bethune held some of the cash stolen in trust for others, and is a heavy loser. Indications point to two thieves operating, and at least one of them had a thorough knowledge of tho usual procedure of the house.
