HXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD.

MF.AT EXPORT TRADE

The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of July 4, 1882: The New Zealand frozen meat trado i» likely to become an important factor in the commerce of the Colony. As a result of the successful shipment of a frozen cargo from Dunedin to London a company is being formed in England to establish a direct line of steamers between New Zealand and Heme. A Taranaki contemporary, in commenting on the subject, draws attention to the wide field which India offers for a colonial trade, and says:—"At present we are only opening up a trade with England, but we cannot see why India and the Cape should not be supplied direct from New Zealand. Already the steamers running between London and Calcutta are fitted up with refrigerating machines, Vi'ith adjoining larder, in which quantities of frozen game, salmon, rabbits, English beef and mutton, as well as vegeI tables, aie placed, and find a ready market at a high price on arrival at the Indian ports. If it pays to send the meat to .England it should be even moie profitable to ship it to Ind'.a, and we are surprised that the trade has not been taken up. With such inexhaustible resources a 3 are to be found in New Zealand, a large export is bound to spring into existence by the means of direct steam communication with England. The Imperial Government has applied to tile Supreme Court for an injunction to restrain the promoters of the English Channel tunnel scheme from proceeding further with the work of construction. " Representations having been made k> the Government that Governor Hobson s tomb in the cemetery of Auckland is nuch in need of repair, it was decided to-day that the work shall be done, telegraphs the Herald's Parliamentary correspondent.
