PAVEMENT ARTISTS.

" ACADEMY » OIF THEIR OWN.

EXHIBITION IN LONDON,

[fro:h oub own correspondent.]

LONDON, May 20

Pavement artists recently held an exhibition of their jy.ork at the Albany Gallery, Piccadilly. The novelty of the exhibition and the low prices of the works Ibave evidently brought about financial success, for very many of the 84 pictures were sold.

The catalogue gives the names of the artists and also the part of London where they ply their craft. Thus we have "James Chesworth of Oxford "Robert Carr of the Embankment," '"Soldier George of the Embankment," "'ConwaY Martin tsf Trafalgar Square." "W. J.' Stubbs of Waterloo Place." "C. 13. McLi»an of Hyde Park Corner" and ''James McCrory of the Embankment.' Some of the works are distinctly good, especially those of the Gloucestershire miner, Mr. A. G. Meek, "Below the Surface," "The Miner," "The Boxing Machine'* and "A Miner" have a strong modern touch and might well be seen in more aristocratic company! Two of the pictures by Mr. Conway Martin are priced at five guineas, but these are the highest prices in the gallery. A group of black and white drawings by the same artist are also of interest. "Soldier George" is more than 60 years of age and has been a pavement artist for over 30 years. "My first pitch was on Tower Hill," he told a press representative. "I started in the winter. The pavement was coated with ice, which had to break up before starting to draw. I work quick. I did four of my exhibition pictures in one afternoon. U here. Under the kitchen table, on the floor. You see, you get used to kneeling at your work."
