CONCRETE FOOTPATHS.

PROGRAMME FOR CONSTRUCTION.

WHANGAREI, Tuesday

The Works Committee of the Borough' Council has instructed the engineer to furnish an estimate for putting down a strip of concrete 16ft. in width in Walton Street from the railway bridge to Cameron Street. This street ig in bad condition and is suitable for concrete paving. The council also decided at its meeting last evening, to construct 130 chains of concrete footpaths covering 16 streets, "These footpaths will be constructed in rotation and it is expected to have the work finished by March 31 next. An. additional list of footpaths classed as B footpaths, covering a distance of approxi-' matelv 80 chains, will also be laid down in concrete. These, however, will not be undertaken until after the first list is completed. An agreement was reached on the conditions under which the council is to subsidise the Whangarei Municipal Silver Band at the rate of £IOO a year. The subsidy will therefore now be available. The subsidy was formerly £156. A request by the Empire Ex-service Association for a subsidy of £25 to be spent on relief work was granted. i The statement of estimated receipts and payments of the general account for theyear ending March 31, 1933, was tabled. The estimated receipts were £12,478. Th» unimproved value of all rateable property in the borough at April 1, 1932, was estimated at £881,175.

The town clerk reported that the-rate of interest ou sinking fund investments with the Public Trusteo had been reduced from 5$ to 4 per cent, and also that the Public Trustee would not. consider buying the council's debentures, unless the sanction of the LocaT ; t}overnment Loans Board was received for the rate of interest be increased to 5| per cent. It was decided to place tho matter before the Municipal Association, asking for its co-operation in obtaining a more favourable aiTangement.
