PULVERISED COAL.
SUCCESS OF EXPERIMENT. USE BY STEAMER EXTENDED. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Hororata, which arrived at, Auckland from Antwerp yesterday morning, is the second British steamer to be fitted to burn pulverised coal. During her recent stay in England the pulverising plant on board was increased and five of her six single-ended boilers are now fired with pulverised coal.
The Hororata, a 12,003 tons twin-screw steamer, was first fitted in 1928 to burn powdered coal, and since then she has made a number of voyages to New Zealand. At firs! only three of the vessel's furnaces were converted for the use ol the new fuel, but. so successful was the experiment that tho plant, Ims been increased and is now capable of feeding all the five boilers with powdered fuel if required. In the meantime, the sixth boiler is hand-fired and is used mostly to generate steam for tho derk winches and auxiliary engines while the vessel is in port.
The pulverising plant on the vessel is the Howden-Bell system and by its use there is a considerable saving in fuel, while 12 men are dispensed with in the stokehold. Thp. vessel made the voyage to Xew Zealand via the Cape of GoArl Hope, and called at Sydney en route to replenish her bunkers.
