WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
Birkdale. —The fourth birthday of the institute was celebrated recently, and there was a very large attendance, including a delegation from Birkenhead, Northcote, Greenhithe and Albany* Mr. Avery gave a talk on bulbs and the growing of daffodils, and Mrs. Clark sang several items. Tea was later served, the committee being the hostesses. Ilakani United. —At the monthly meeting of the institute a very instructive talk and demonstration were given on moccasin making from sheepskins by the Misses Hastie and Whaugh. The new library opened this month with a splendid collection of books. Tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Mayes, Mrs. Tantrum and Miss Mason. Happy Valley.—The winners of a thrift biscuif, competition were Mrs. B. Ogle and Mrs. E. J. Ogle. The programme for the meeting included a pianoforte duet by Mrs. 0. Wooster and Miss Wooster, and a recitation by Mrs. Perry. Ivowliai.—At a meeting of the Kowhai Institute an instructive lecture on honienursing was given by Mrs. W. Nicholson. The. hostesses were Mcsdames Hope, L. Perkins, R. Limmer, Laxon, McLachlan and C. Perkins. Ngaruawahia.—Mesdames Fuller and Welch were appointed delegates to the Waikato Federation council meeting to be held in Hamilton. A competition for the best decorated bowl was won by Miss (i. Bell. A glove-making demonstration was given by Mrs. Hutt. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdamos Fuller, Joy and Spiers. Tatarariki. —The first meeting of the newly formed institute was held recently at*the home of the hon. secretary, Mrs. I). A. Savident. Members discussed ideas for future meetings. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames G. A. Bikys and I). A. Savident. Wairnaua-Nukuhou.—The institute met, recently. Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Bell were appointed delegates to attend the Bay of Plenty Federation meeting, Mrs. Wylde being Yho nominee for the executive. Mrs. Burnett, gnve a useful and interesting demonstration 011 the making of humpy cushions. Hostesses wore Mesdames Finn, Grover and Hewitt. Waitakaruru. —An interesting demonstration was given at a meeting of the institute by Mesdames McLane and Cummins on bread-making. A " bring-and-buy " stall was arranged for the next, six months. Mrs. Butdns and Mrs. Francis were nominated to arrange for the visiting of the sick. An address was given bv Mr. W. Slretton on the hisstory of the Waitakaruru Hall. Whangarei.— The monthly meeting of the institute centre was held this week. A successful " bring-and-btiv " stall was held. The hostesses were Mrs. J. Evans. Mrs Maves and IS Irs. Cleaver. The delegates from the Whangarei group centre will meet the members on April 27 to discuss the formation of an additional group in Whangarei.
