The Women's Progress Club (inc.), held its weekly meeting at Iho Higher Thought Temple, Wellington Street, on Wednesday afternoon. The speaker was Mrs. Hyams, of the H-P.B. Lodge, Theosophical Society, and her subject, which was ably handled, was "Political Economics." The speaker advocated the Douglas system as a means of solving the present-day financial difficulties. During the afternoon a solo "Sunshine and Rain was sung by Airs. Wallace a n Ihe Temple Trio rendered " In Rose Time, " Berceuse" and " A Perfect Day." Tea was served at the close of the meeting. A very interesting lecture recital was given at the Penwomen's Club by Mr. Len. Barnes, his subject being " Interpretation in Song." The elements that went to make a singer—voice, naturalness, poise, technique, mentality and voice production were discussed and Mr. Barnes gave illustrations of the effects of f;tcial expression upon words and phrases. The importance of understanding the poem and the writer's meaning was also stressed and Mr. Barnes spoke, too, of the importance of the accompaniment. In conclusion Mr. Barnes sang ballads, Irish love songs, dramatic and modern songs, thus giving point, to his lecture.
