FIGHTING DEPRESSION.
WHAT WOMEN CAN DO. ** Progress versus Depression" was the subject of an interesting address given to members of the League of Pen women yesterday by Mrs. Arthur Jupp (Anne Rutledge). Mrs. Helen Griffiths presided; Mrs. Jupp pointed out various ways in which women could help in the battle against depression. " Success can never be achieved by harbouring false gods," she said, M and in many instances the god 4 fear* is so loved and respected that it is bugged closer than a brother. It h no good waiting until better times come. We must produce work—good, honest-to-goodness toil, stimulating the blood so that people feel like human beings instead of apologising for existence." Speaking specially to the housewife Mrs. Jupp said that now was the time to buy at rock-bottom prices, to buy wisely, getting value for money. "It is a great time to circulate some of the fixed deposits in the banks that are increasing so enormously in Australia and New Zealand," she said. " Think of the farms that could be developed by money now idle and stimulated to increased production and income by fertilising, by making smaller paddocks and by cropping. Think, too, of the work that could be created by a universal demand for New Zealand frocks and coats, silk stockings and underwear for the half-million women of New Zealand.
" Why should ub feel sorry for Miss So-and-so, out of work, when such a thing as a thorough-going dressmaking industry could employ her, and she in turn could spend her earnings in New Zealand, I firmly believe that if we women realised our strength, our power, and organised we would secure greater joy in daily life and greater protection for our sex in these difficult days."
