HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP. Twenty-five new members of tlio Auckland Horticultural Society wero elected at the last meeting of tho executive. The membership has Leon doubled this season, chiefly owing to the enthusiasm of the chairman, Mr. E. Ilickscn, the secretary, Mr. N. Pierce, and c. few others, and now stands at about 500. Mr. Pierce reported that the recent dahlia show had proved a great success, the entries being a record, while the results were also satisfactory. The resignations of Mrs. C. Harrakilde and Mr. W. Spinley, as members ol the committee, were accepted with regret, and Miss Spencer and Mr R. W. Shepherd wero elected to fill the vacancies. An offer of a handsome silver cup by Sir Edwin Mitchelson was gratefully accepted. The cup will bo competed for at the forthcoming chrysanthemum show, as the points' prize in the amateur section for chrysanthemums. A sub-committee was set up to confer with the Institute of Horticulture regarding combined lectures and displays in the interests of horticulture. Reference was made to the loss the society and horticulture generally had sustained through the recent death of Mr. J. Rock, and a vote of sympathy with his relatives was passed. The society's next, daffodil show was fixed for September 8 and 9.
