LAND FOR A RAILWAY.
FARMER COMPENSATED.
SUM OF £IBSO AWARDED. TAWA FLAT DEVIATION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —jPKESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Friday. After four days' hearing in a claim for £4175, compensation for land taken and allegedly injuriously affected in the construction of the Tawa Flat railway deviation, judgment was given in the Supreme Court to-day. The claim was made by David Bowell, farmer, against the Minister of Public Works.
It was stated by counsel for Bowell that about ten acres of land had been taken, and the remainder of the property had been depreciated. Previously the property had a frontage of at least half-a-mile, which rendered it useful for subdivision purposes, but that advantage had now been lost. When tho line was completed, it was estimated that 30 trains a day would pass over the crossing, and that would adversely affect tho farm. The department had suggested an allowance of £2OO for the shifting of the homestead, but this offer was considered absurd. Tlie Court awarded the claimant £1350.
