STATE LOTTERY OPPOSED.
METHODIST RESOLUTION. " DEMORALISING " INFLUENCE. [BV TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. An emphatic protest against the institution of State lotteries in New Zealand was mado by tho Methodist Conference to-day. Discussion also took place- oil the moral aspect of art unions. Tho following resolution was passed:— "This conference emphatically urges the Government and Parliament to withstand the proposal for a. State lottery of which notice has been given by a private member. It declares that charitable causes and education would be ill served if such worthy ends were supported by demoralising means, and further, that a largo body of public opinion would bo .seriously affronted if tho proposal were received in any other way than righteous indignation."
