ACTIVITY IN NAPIER.

RE-ERECTION OF BUILDINGS. MANY OFFICES AND SHOPS. • [FROM OUTt OWN CORRESPONDENT.] N NAPIER, Friday. An announcement that three buildings, with a total frontage of over 70ft., are to be commenced in Hastings Street shortly, is further evidence that in the near future there will be a considerable amount of activity as far as building operations are concerned in that part of the town. Mr. George Cox, of Auckland, intends to recondition and alter the shop which was occupied prior to the earthquake by Messrs. Cox and Company, tailors. This shop and that adjoining will be built more or less on a community basis in order to effect such reductions in cost as might be afforded by party walls. Further south in Hastings Street is Mr. H. McGregor's building, which will contain two small shops on the ground floor and offices on the upper floor. The damage which was caused by earthquake and fire to this structure was not so severe as in gome cases, although it was severe enough, and it will be possible to use part of the existing walls in the new structure. Gn the adjoining section to Mr. McGregor it is proposed to make a start soon with the erection of a building for Mrs. K. Condon. The old building, which was formerly occupied by Messrs. Bestall, Limited, was completely ruined by the earthquake and fire. A new twoetorey structure will be proceeded with in reinforced concrete.

These three buildings, plans for which are in course of preparation by Messrs. C. Tilliard Natusch and Sons, add still further to the number of buildings which are to be erected in Hastings Street in the near future. It has been previously announced that Abbott's Buildings, Mr. T. Parker's building, the Masonic Hotel, the Bank of Australasia and the Commercial Bank of Australia, to be erected on the eastern side of Hastings Street, shortly jprill be commenced.
