SWEEPSTAKE AND SERMON.
A Sweepstake on the text of n sermon w-as held recently at South Mimms, Hertfordshire. In 1698 Richard Bradshawe left a Sum of money to provide bread each Christinas- for parishioners both rich arid poor. He directed also that the incumbent should receive a guinea for preaching a crmon about bread. The [vicar, the Rev. Allen Hay, has preachid more than thirty of the sermons, I and sonsequently he has sometimes ltd to use the same text. On the occasioij 6l the recent Christmas the parishioneif decided to organise a sweepstake o| the text that would be chosen. The pnle, went to a woman, who gave it to the iiurch funds.
