BEATEN BY A SAFE.
Thieves who broke into the Cinema de Luxe at Hastings, England, lately made a special ladder of 17 rungs to bridge a 60ft. chasm between the cliff on which Hastings Castle stands and a window in the cinema. They crossed the ladder while a gale was at its height and rain was falling in torrents. When the robbers had smashed a lock and broken into the manager's office they were rewarded by £3, although moro than £IOO was in the safe. So great were the thieves' efforts to open this that they frequently refreshed themselves with water, using the manager's cup, but the safe proved too strong for them and they dpparted, leaving the ladder behind.
