BAKERS' AWARD HOURS.
RULING OF THE COURT. The Arbitration Court has given its answers to the questions of interpretation of the recent Bakers and Pastrycooks' Award, submitted to it last week. To the question whether an extra payment is payable for each period of eight consecutive hours worked, provided the time of commencing work is outside the hours after 4 a.m. and up to noon, the Court answers that the hours may hot be consecutive, for there may be breaks. Tho meaning of the provision is that aformal shift or eight hours' period, which may or may not be continuous, may be commenced at any hour, and rna . v be spread over two calendar days. Ihe extra, payment depends on tho hour at w'jch the period commences. Whether the actual length of the period is exactly eight hours is immaterial. The Court further answered that the special pavment is to bo made to jobbers if their time of starting is outside the hours of 4 a.m. to noon.
