SEARCH FOR SALESMEN.
Sir.—ln the article on this subject published on Wednesday your informant wants to know what is wrong with the young men of Auckland? I think l ean give him some idea. An employer starts in business. He is very enthusiastic about tho merits of his goods and their possibilities as money-makers. He tells salesmen that they will have no trouble at all m making £5 to £lO a week. The salesman is fired with the employer's enthusiasm and accepts the position. He makes a start, full of pep and enthusiasm, cut disillusionment follows disillusionment, ana finally he gives it up, because he is not making what ne expected, r.nd does not see any signs of doing it. Another employer advertises. The salesman goes to see this one.. Much the same thing h fl P" pens again: And so it goes on. what has been the position ? The salesman has been using up his capital in sustenance, while endeavouring to sell the employer's goods and help him to build his business. After a time either he becomes disgusted with tho idea of helping to build businesses on tho cheap, arm of being a cheap means of advertising for the employers, or his capital or means of sustenance runs out. The consequence is that he now refuses to do any more work on commission. Can we blame h* nl ' Your informant accuses men who have been through this performance and some of tho "young men.of Auckland" .of * lack of confidence in their own powers. Could not one reverse this lack of confidence idea and apply it to the employers ? Have they enough confidence in their own goods as a saleable a n . c money-making proposition, and their ability to judge men and pick salesmen. If they have, why are they not pi®* pared to hack up this confidence an ability by offering a salesman, say, » retainer and commission ? Is it' right expect a salesman to use his capital o sustenance while he goes out to see tt what the employer said is right. r A Business
