WAIKATO RIVER REPORT.

CONTROL OF LOWER REACHES INVESTIGATIONS BEING MADE. [by telegraph.—special reporter.] WELLINGTON. Friday. Information when the report on the Waikato River, which is being prepared by engineers of the Public Works Department, would be available, was sought by Mr. J. N. Massey in an urgent question to the Minister of Public Works, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr. Massey said a grant to enable a report to be prepared was made in 1929. Replying, Mr. Coates said the question of control of the lower reaches of tho Waikato was one of extreme complexity and involved many difficult considerations. A great deal of information had already been gathered and tho department had placed special officers in charge to work up data and prepare a report. It was not possible for him to indicate just when, the report would bo ready. The experience of the past indicated that it was very undesirable that a hasty decision should be made or that any work should be commenced until the Goternment was thoroughly satisfied that what was proposed would be effective, and that the expense would not bo disproportionate to the advantages that could confidently be relied on.
