THE CENTRAL AUTHORITY.
MEETING IN AUCKLAND TO-DAY.
The Central Licensing Authority appointed under the Transport Act, 1931, will commence its initial Auckland sitting in the Native Land Court Hall tin's afternoon. Mr. S. S. Allen, of Morrinsvillc, will preside in place of the chairman, Mr. Justice Frazcr, who will be unable to attend owing to tho Arbitration Court, of which ho is president, also sitting this afternoon. The remaining member of the authority is Mr. 11. B. S. Johnstone, of Otaio, Canterbury.
During the silting of the authority, which is expected <o Inst ;i week, evidence will bo heard in connection with applications for the granting of longdistance passenger service licences from Auckland to country centres. In addition to the licensing of buses and service cars the -Act requires all taxis which ply for hire places, such as from a city stand to a racecourse, to be licensed. Only taxis engaged in bona-fide taxi work nro exempt from the provisions of the Art.
The Commissioner of Transport, Mr. J. .S. Hunter, arrived from the South yesterday morning on business connected with the inauguration of the various district licensing authorities. During the day he held conferences with Mr. \V. Jones, chairman of the No. 1 Authority, which is to control licensing in North Auckland; and Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the No. 2 Authority, which will operate in the Auckland city and suburban area. Mr. Hunter will leave for Hamilton this morning, en route to Wellington.
