THE WATERFRONT ROAD.
PROVISION FOR SLIPS. BAN ON STREET SIGNS. The question of responsibility for clearing possible slips from the cliffs above the waterfront road at Orakei after tha City Council takes control of the road is under discussion by the council and the Public Works Department. It was reported to the council last evening that the department wag prepared to pay £2OO, the interest ou which, it considered, would meet all future expenses. The city engineer, however, stated that the cost of dealing with fallen material had averaged £5 a month so far, although no large slips had occurred. He was of opinion that the department should deposit at least £I2OO with the council. The engineer pointed out that the department had saved over £IOOO through the council agreeing to dispense with a footpath on the landward side of the road. The recommendation-, which the Worki Committee hsd endorsed, was adopted.
On the recommendation of the Townplanning Committee it was decided that the waterfront road, when taken over by the council, should be included in the list of streets in which the erection of sign is prohibited.
