WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

Brown's Bay.—A meeting of ladies was convened by Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Ross at the Brown's Bay cabaret, for the formation of a Women's Institute. Mrs. Dickson, of Albany, presided and Mrs. Irwin and Mrs. Tate, of Greenhithe, addressed (he meeting. The matter was enthusiastically taken up by those present. The following officers and committee were elected:—President, Mrs. Stone; secretary, Miss King; and Mesdames Gcrlach, Jones, Shirley and Ross, committee. It was decided that the meetings be held on the first Thursday in the month and suggestions were given for the next programme. Happy Valley.—The February meeting of the institute took the form of a picnic for members and their families, which was held at tho president's home. Lunch under the trees was enjoyed by all, but a rainstorm prevented outdoor "sport, although swimming was enjoyed by the younger people. Members decided (o enter for the " thrift table" competition at the bi-annual conference of the Auckland Federation of Women's Institutes.

Kaihere.—The first meeting of the year was held in the pavilion Inst week. After a considerable amount of business had been dealt with a competition was held, Mrs. A. Wallis being the prize-winner. Mrs. MeCullough read ft very interesting paper on tlie benefits of sunshine and how to make the most of it. Mrs. J. Thompson gave a demonstration of pen-painting. It was decided to hold a picnic during March. The hostesses for the day were Mcsdames MeCullough and Wallace. Opotiki.—On account of unfavourable weather the garden party arranged by the Opotiki Institute had to be abandoned, and a social afternoon in the Farmers' rooms was held in its place. Stalls did good business, those in charge being: Miss B. Kelly (cakes and sweets), and Mrs. Hambly (produce). Bridge was played, Mrs. Newth proving the winner. Competitions were won by Mrs. Newth (cakes), Mrs. A. Vanstone (a dinner), Mrs. A. Neilson (doll), Mrs. Cyril Newth (basket of vegetables). The hostesses were Mesdames Forbes, Pearson, Dick, Mansell, Abbot and Crawford.

Tangiteroria.—The first meeting of the Tangiteroria Women's Institute was held in the Settlers' Hall on February 17. It was decided to hold meetings on the third Thursday in each month. A programme was drawn up in readiness for the next meeting. Afternoon tea ended a pleasant afternoon. To Aroha.—The first meeting for the new financial year of the Te Aroha Women's Institute took place last week. Mrs. K. McGirr gave an exhibition of hand-made toys, and for the next halfhour the cutting of patterns was exceedingly popular. Supper was preceded by a short play reading, "A Marriage Has Been Arranged," by Misses Gwen Willis and C. McGirr. The hostesses for the evening were Mcsdames Espiner, McKay and Mav.

Woodlands.—The monthly meeting was presided over by Mrs. Mulhern, and was held in the hall. Tho roll-call was "My Favourite Flower, and Why," and was well responded to. Mrs. Tabb gave an interesting demonstration on the drying of beans for winter use. A competition arangod by Mrs. Mulhern was won by Mrs. Pilkington. Afternoon tea, followed by a social half-hour, brought the meeting to a close.

Waipu: Tho monthly meeting of the Waipu Women's Institute was conducted by the president, Mrs. J. P. McKay, who presided over a good attendance. After the business had been transacted, Mrs. Grant gave a graphic and amusing account of a trip through Norway, and displayed some beautiful specimens of Norwegian needlework, chinaware, carving and jewellery. Mrs. J. C. McKay sang and a competition for tho best apple pie was won by Mrs. A. W. McKay. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Slonne, Somner, Shield, ,T. McLennan, C. McLennan and Miss Hall

Whangarei.—The annual picnic in connection with the Maunu Women's Institute was held under ideal weather conditions in Mrs. H. Snell's grounds. After lunch the members joined in an elusive treasure hunt organised by Miss Millington, the prizes being Avon bv Mrs." Millington, first, and Mrs. D. Wilson, second. Quite a large number of members explored the beauties of tho stream that meanders through the beautiful grounds, and bathing was greatly enjoyed. Tea was served.

Waiuku.—At a meeting of the institute a most interesting and well illustrated address was given by Miss Kelland on "Native Trees and Shrubs," and Miss Elsie Crighton delighted the audience with her dancing, A competition on "Trees" was won by Mrs. Fitchett. Mrs. Waugh presented a report on tho arts and crafts circle. The hostesses for the afternoon wore Mesdames Munro, Ohlson, Guthrie and Whiteside.:
