VERANDAH WRECKED.
motor.car smashes posts. ESCAPE OF TWO GIRLS. ACCIDENT IN QUEEN STREET. A largo corrugated iron verandah outside the premises of T. Peacock and Sons and A. J. Harding, Ltd., Queen Street, collapsed when a motor-ear crashed into the supporting posts about 11.20 last evening. Two girls, who were standing under the verandah, jumped clear before the structure fell. The driver of the car was not hurt. The car struck the first supporting post and then crashed into and broke the two other posts. The portion of the verandah outside Peacock's, shop fell. to the footpath, the iron sheets coining apart and the wooden signs being splintered. Only the top half of the third post was broken and the other portion of the verandah came to rest against this. The noise of the falling iron could be heard for a considerable distance and attracted a crowd of spectators. The debris blocked the footpath for some distance. The glass windows of the shops were not broken.
The damage to the car was comparatively light, the off wheels, front mudguard and body-work being crushed.
