LAMBS FOR EXPORT.
DISTRICT COMPETITION. The decision of the Auckland Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Association to introduce a district fat lamb competition at this year's show is of particular importanco since it was due to a recognition of the progress the Province is making in a new direction. In recent times Auckland has made remarkable strides in the sheep-raising industry and as a result has added largely to the security of the producer and the prosperity of the community. The day when it was considered that the quality of fat lamb, famed as "prime Canterbury," could be produced only in the province bearing that name has passed and Auckland has made a full contribution toward the explosion of the idea. Fat lambs from this Province, and especially those from the Waikato, have received the highest praise from authorities at Smithfield, and, more important still, have commanded the best prices offering on that market.
A realisation that the industry has a future in the Auckland Province, and is worthy of all the encouragement which can be given it, has induced the association to introduce the district competition, the chief object boing to popularise the policy of raising export lambs in conjunction with the production of butterfat. As in other competitions of this nature, the entries will be judged and prizes awarded at the show. The lambs will then bo killed and shipped to London, the carcases being judged by Smithfield experts and additional prizes awarded prior to being sold on behalf of the exhibitors.
