[by TELEGRW'H. —OWN COiIRESrONDENT.] PALMERSTON NORTH, Wednesday. | There was very little form to guide backers in the maiden event, hut Gran C'haco, with Cray up. started favourite. He duly won, but was closely pressed by Riotous, who was having his first race. They were a .poor lot and wi'h more experience Riotous would have won. Tho Mirror whipped away from (lie barrier at the start and took no part in the race. Full Mark scored an easy win in the Highweight from the favourites Tigensm and Arrowhead. Full Mark was always handily placed, and taking charge from the pacemaker, Rash, before reaching the straight, ho was never in danger of losing. Arrowhead was first to go after him, but he wa.s just as decisively beaten for second by Tigeris«n. In the Worxlville Handicap Patearoa made the curly pace, but once settled down Patearoa slowed right no. This did not suit Reed on Mahora, and he took his mount to the front. In another furlong Arajean had rushed up and taken charge, and finally Gray on Esteem went from the rear, and cut down the field to lend round the turn. Esteem was challenged by Mahora and later Jayson and Ivng Colossus. He held on, however, and won. The pace did not suit King Colossus, but lie nevertheless ran an excellent race. Ho will npt be long now. Jayson was finishing very well. and. looked a. trifle unlucky. Maliora ran a good race. A surprise was sprung by Wasteland in the two-year-old race, but she won on her merits. The' start was not. a good one. Mister Quex getting the hest of it. The winner is light'y-built filly, and is owned, and trained by F. J. Carmont. Mister Quex had every chance. Souchong won tho open sprint very comfortably. Ho was a. well-backed horse and his performance fully justified the support. The disappointing runner was Leisure. Tho grey horse Araunah was backed as "unbeatable in '.lie hack sprint, but he only just won. lie lay well back in tho running and at the straight entrance was conceding six of eight lengths. He stretched out in the run home and cut them down one by one, but Grand Lahu stuck on well and Araunah just got his nose in front as they crossed tho line. Araunah's narrow call was a shock to his numerous supporters, but. it, was good _ effort for he has not dono a great deal since he won at Trentham. ' Monarchy,' with Gray up. carried the bulk of (he money in (he hack seven furlongs, but a fair third was his portion at the finish after having every ( chance. St. Roger essayed to win all the way. However. it was Sanguine King who produced tho best effort and he just caught St. Roger in the last strides. The winner paid a good price. Moa Bird was favourite for the concluding event and lay in behind tho leader, Royal Linkage, to the straight then eh? made her run to score decisively. SECOND DAY'S EVENTS. LIST OF ACCEPTANCES.
