NOTES ON THE FORM.

' BESSIE PARRISH'S WIN. IMPROVEMENT IN TIMES. DOUBLE FOR MODERN LIGHT. Bessie Parrish was favourite for flie Hanurewa Handicap, at a lit Me better than even money, and Zanzibar, Moko Girl and Tiwha were next best supported. Leaving the mark well Bessie Parrish trotted evenly nil the way and making her run half a mile from home won comfortably. She was handicapped on 3.-13 and improved on this to go 3.34 2-5, while the second, third and fourth horses, Todd Birigen. Moko Girl and IVindchnt. also bettered their handicap times* considerably. Win Huon was tho early leader from Tiwha, Bessie Parrish, Moko Girl and Todd Bingen,. but at the end of a round Moko Girl was iust, in front of Todd Biupen, with Tiwha almost in line, and Bessie Parrish next In the last half mile Moko Girl and then Todd Bingcn broke, and Bessie Parrish, entering the straight clear, ran home an easy wintjfr by two lengths froin Todd Bingen. with Moko Girl one and a-half lengths away third and Windchnt another half a length awav fourth. The others wcro well back, their order being Tiwha, Gold Realm. Mnrble Star and Zanzibar. T'his was Bessie Parrisli's first win this season, and she did it well! Todd Bingen's improved shown; compared with the first day formed tho subject of an inquiry. The explanation, which was to the effect that the horse broke up badly on Monday, was accepted. Moko Girl was mads a good deal of use of and lost all chance when she broke. Windchat looked a possibility for second coming into the straight, but repeatedly left her feet under pressure. Worthy Cause Beats Pcgaway. Pegaway was a strong odds-on fancy for the Howick Handicap and Free Logan. Worthy Cause and Prince Kiawah were the only others supported with any spirit. At the finish these four were out on their own, well clear °f the others, but the order in which they passed the post was different from that in which they were backed. Worthy Cause led from end to end. although at the finish he had onlv a neck to spare from the favourite. Free Logan, who lost ground at the start, was two lengths away third and Prince Etnwah. after breaking, was a length further back fourth. Gold Seam followed Worthy Cause out from the start and after the first round she was still second to him. followed by Pegaway and Mazda together and Free Logan, who had rapidly made up ground, next. Pegaway soon displaced Gold Seam in second position, but could not improve on it, although at the end Worthy Cause had only a very narrow margin in his favour. Free Logan's hurst of speed after beine so slow away took a lot out. of him and ho was onlv a moderate third™ Prince Etawah spoilt his prospects when he broke. Mazda was fifth. Gold Seam sixth and Francis Lincoln seventh. Auto Machine's Failure. Auto Machine, who was a good favourite for the Mackenzie Handicap over Gold Dial and Gold Treasure, soon put his supporters out of their suspense, for ho tangled at the start and lost all chance. It was left to Enawah. outsider but one of the field of seven, to make a good run at the end. after being handy all the way. to win very easily from the second fancy. Gold Dial. The first four horses, Enawah, Gold Dial. Impromptu and Gold Treasure, finished in the order in which they were numbered in the book. Impromptu was first away and he opened a break of ten lengths to Gold Dial passing the stands, with Enawah close ur> and the others straggled out. At tho end of a mile Impromptu was still ten lengths out from Gold Dial and Enawah, but when they came past the stands the second time there was only a length or two between Impromptu and Gold Dial, with Enawah I on the latter's wheel, succeeded by Gold Treasure and Mountain Dell, with Auto Machine and The Abbey 50yds further back, hopelessly out of it. Crossing the top Impromptu broke and Enawah. after waiting on Gold Dial until they entered the straight, drew away to beat her by 21 lengths, with Impromptu, null in? up. four lengths away third, and Gold Treasure a neck away fourth. Enawah went solidly all the way and b'stified the opinion of her owner. Mr. W. Johnstone, who considered he was most unlucky on the first day. Gold Dial van an honest race, but Impromptu, after establishing a lonsr lead early, could not go on with it, although considering that he broke he was fortunate to get third. Auto Machine was in the. hunt after, getting away so bndly-Siid "Moxirtiu'n Dell"" and Tlio Abbey were also gTeat disappointments. Nelson Trainer's First Win. Travis gave the Nelson trainer. L. F. .Berkett. his first win for tho .meeting, when he easily led the field home in the Sylvia Park Handicap, for which he was a pronounced favourite over Dad's Hope, Rey do Quest and Some Dillon. Bell Dial. Rev do Quest and Travis were the earlv leaders and passing the stands the second time Bell Dial still held command, followed by Travis. Dad's Hope and Some Dillon. Turning into the back stretch Dad's Hope hit a sulky and broke. Travis was then in -front and from then on he comfortably held his own to win by two lengths from Some Dillon, with Dad's nope half-a-lcnsth away third, and Rey de Quest fourth, followed by Master Huiii, Glnndore. Xella Dillon and Bell Dial. Travis won conviucingly and Some Dillon showed a great improvement on his first day's form. Dad's Hope was unfortunate in breaking. The Only Double Winner. Modern Light became the first and onlv double winner at the meeting when she came with a fins run at the finish of the Richmond Handicap to win by a neck from Prince Pedro. Jersey Thorpe was the early leader from Typist. Derby \ ale. Margaret Wallace and Myrtlene. Along the back Jersey Thorpe and Typist opened up a break of four lengths, but although they were niill in the lead passing the stnnda again Prince Pedro. Margaret Wnllace, (rumdigger and Realty were fairly close to them. Entering the straight the otder was Jersey Thorpe, Prince Pedro, Typist. Modern Light and Gumdigger. and in the run home Modern Light wore down Prince Pedro to beat him narrowly, although with something in hand, while Jersey Thorpe was two lengths away third and Gumdigger three-quarters of a length further back _ fourth, succeeded by Raydus, lypist and Myrtlene. Modern Light again snowed the great, improvement she has made since entering F. J. Smith's 6table, having won at her only two starts for the ex-English trainer. Paradigm was a. good favourite for (he Rangitoto Handicap and duly won comfortably, after quickly making up his handicap. Valloden skipped at the start and Royal Triumrh led early from Vallorien. Kolrnar and Paradigm, with very little between 'hem. The order at the mile post wo 3 still tho same and there was no change until Paradigm ran into the lead half-a-mile from home. From then on it was a procession. Paradigm winning by one and a-half lengths from Valloden. with Royal Triumph two lengths away third and Kolmar a neck further back fourth. Dan Direct's Victory. Great Parrish. having his first race since last October, was made favourite for the Forbes' Handicap, with Te Wahia. Kewpie.'s Triumph and Dan Direct next in rjemand. Master Huia was moving in at the start, and led early from Dad's Hope. Dan Direct and Nella Dillon. Passing the stands the order was the same, but Dan Direct moved up crossing the top and was first into the straight from Kewpie's Triumph and Dad's Hope. In the run homo Dan Direct held off Kewpie's Triumph to beat him by a. neck, with Dad's Hope a length and a-quarter away third, and Great Parrish two lengths away fourth. Then came Master Huia. To Wahia. Warspite and First Flight. Raydus, favourite for the Farewell Handt rap over Gaza and Poi, scored nicely from i Poi. Satin Bird was the. early leader from , Poi, with three lengths to Raydus. Oliver J Thorpe. T?olfe Audubon and Gaza. Crossing i the top Poi went to the front from Raydus with Oliver Thorpe three lengths away and another break of five lengths to Rolfe f Audubon. In the run home Raydus passed ] Poi to beat he.r by one and a-half lengths. f Oliver Thorne being third three lengths away, and Our Peter fourth two lengths 1 further hack. The race was a good thing I for Raydus, who was well ridden by L. < Laver. t
