AFRICAN CRICKETERS.

MATCH AGAINST AUCKLAND. HOME TEAM SCORES 342. TOTAL PASSED BY VISITORS. TWO CENTURIES REGISTERED. The match between the South Africans and Auckland was continued at Eden Park yesterday, the visitors passing Auckland's first innings total with two wickets in hand. On the previous day Auckland scored 296 for eight wickets. Continuing yesterday, chiefly through Matheson, who was unbeaten with 83, Auckland carried its total to 342. The visitors did not start well, losing two wickets for 33 runs, but a splendid third-wicket partnership between Mitchell and Taylor added 167 runs. Taylor played brilliant cricket in compiling a century, and Mitchell, one of the opening batsmen, played a stubborn defensive game for 122 not out. Auckland's innings closed 45 minutes after resuming yesterday morning, the total of 342 occupying 289 minutes. Two Cheap Wickets. Christy and Mitchell opened South Africa's first innings an hour before luncheon, the first-named facing Cleverley and notching a brace off the over which included two no-balls. Matheson bowled at* the other end and off the first delivery there was an appeal for caught behind against Mitchell, Rowntree dropping the ball. Matheson dismissed Christy leg before. 19—1—12.1—12. Morkel commenced freely, getting a four at the expense of both Cleverley and Matheson to the leg fence. He was bowled off his pads by Matheson shortly afterwards. 332—12. Taylor partnered Mitchell and McCoy replaced Cleverley. Taylor quickly settled down and Allcott was brought on to replace Matheson, who took over from McCoy at the other end. Allcott quietened Taylor, the bowler keeping a fine length and turning appreciably. Fifty went up after 53 minutes' play. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 61 for twe wickets (Taylor 19, Mitchell 11). Cleverley and Allcott took up the attack on resuming, the first-named bowling two no-balls. Taylor started freely, once hitting Allcott hard to the on boundary. After cutting a no-ball from Cleverley through the slips for four, Mitchell was missed behind by Rowntree in the bowler's same over. Several deliveries which were keeping low troubled the batsmen, but Taylor continued to bat the more freely, and ran into the forties. Tbe century went up after 105 minutes' play. Fifty to Taylor. Taylor reached the fifties in 78 minutes, scoring a brace, a three and a four off one over from Matheson. Next he almost hooked Allcott for a six to the squareleg boundary. Weir took his first turn with the ball by replacing Matheson when the board read 113. Off the new trundler's second delivery Taylor went right out and gave a stumping chance, but Rowntree missed the opportunity by mishandling the ball, which kept low and was well out. Taylor was executing some excellent shots, while Mitchell still defended stubbornly at the other end, with occasional scoring strokes. The pair were giving a fine exhibition of running between the wickets, and gained many short singles as a result Runs were being added at a fast rat-e and Mitchell was displaying more scoring shots, and ran into the forties. Sparkling strokes by Taylor, notably a particularly strong on drive, carried the batsman past the eighties. Cleverley came on again in place of Weir, being twice noballed in the over. Two fours to Taylor off Vivian and a single off Cleverley took the batsman to the century, and he received rounds of applause. He had been batting for 118 minutes. Mitchell's score was now 41 and the total 174. Mitchell reached 50 with a cover drive to the boundary off CleverIcy, after being at the wickets for 158 minutes. *The second century appeared a minute later, and Allcott was brought on in place of McCoy. With his third ball he bowled Taylor off his pads, the' batsman attempting his favourite hook shot. Taylor had been at the wickets for 132 minutes and the partnership yielded 167 runs. 200—3—]13. Cameron, the captain, opened with some pretty shots and soon reached doubles. At the tea adjournment the score was 219 for three wickets (Mitchell 58, Cameron 14). Cameron Bowled. Cleverley and Weir bowled on the resumption, * the last-named clean bowling Cameron with a ball which kept low after 19 runs had been added. 238 — 4—22. When Dalton and Mitchell _ were associated runs came chiefly in singles. The 250 appeared after 199 minutes' play. Matheson and Allcott were the bowlers at this stage. Quieter batting followed, Mitchell gradually creeping into the eighties, while Dalton approached the twenties. Just after passing this mark Dallon was well beaten by Allcott. 288—5—22. Allcott also dismissed Viljoen and McMillan, both clean bowled and had Balaskas stumped. 338—8—8.8—8. Just previously Mitchell reached his century after batting for 260 minutes. The 300 took 247 minutes to compile. Auckland's first innings total was passed when Mitchell, now partnered by Brown, cover drove Cleverley to the fence.
