WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

Dargaville.—The institute held its monthly meeting at the residence of the president, Mrs. C. H. Crump. A demonstration of glove-making was given by Mesdames C. H. Crump and F. S. Goulding. A moccasin competition was won by Mrs. H. Mawson, and another-com-petition by Mesdames M. Peko and A. Dunn. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames H. Mawson, J. N. Stark A. E. Harding and F. S. Colliding.

Hakaru United.—The monthly meeting was held recently. Mrs. Pritchard continued with her scries of folk-dancing lessons. A demonstration of the preserving of apples was given by Mrs. McClean. The roll call, "A Seasonable Recipe " brought forth a good response. Tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. A. Stewart, Mrs. Franich and Miss Hodgson. Hikurangi.—The institute held its last meeting in Mr. Cochrane's paddock, this being considered more suitable in hot weather than indoors. The president, Mrs. Dale, presided over a large attendance. It was decided to hold an exhibition in April, the winning articles to be sent in May to the thrift competition in Auckland. Mrs. Rogers read a humorous story, and a competition on making bows from paper ribbons was won by Mrs. H. Pearson. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Piatt, B. Piatt, Nicol, Robinson, Harris and Wilson.

Kopuarahi.—The first meeting of the year was held on Wednesday at the home of Tilrs. IT. Bowen. Mrs. Kneebone presided. Two competitions, arranged by the president and Mrs. Bowen, were won by Mrs. L. Mouldey. A bead demonstration by Miss M. Hall was much appreciated. The hostesses were Mrs. Candy, Mrs. Bowen, Mrs. Bird and Mrs. Braithwaite.

Maungaturoto.—The February meeting of the Maungaturoto Women's Institute was held recently, Mis. Ridling presiding over a fair attendance. After business had been dealt with the president presented each of the two institute babies, Shirley Worthington and Fay Huband. with a mug. Mrs. W. McMillan was elected to the committee. The competitions were won by Airs. Eager and Mrs. V. Cullen. It was decided that this branch admit members at 11 years of age. Tea brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. The hostesses were Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. W. McMillan.

Mangonui.—A successful meeting was held in McKay's Hall, when a demonstration of rug-making was given by Miss M. Wrathall. A competition for the best recipe, together with a sample of the recipe, was won by Mrs. Pai'kinson. A musical programme arranged by Mrs. Phillips was much appreciated. The hostesses were Mrs. .Anderson, Mrs. Bridgens and Mrs. Wrathall. Mangarata. —At the February meeting of llio Mangarata Women's Institute, Mrs. E. G. Davidson presided. The, meeting was opened with institute songs. A competition of something useful made out, of a sugar bag was won by Mrs. I hornton. The 1 oil-call was hints on jammaking and preserving. Mrs. Morrin gave a talk on gardening. ftlrs. Bramble was appointed to the charge of the sewing circle and Mrs. Samson the cooking circle. It- was decided to write a letter of sympathv to Mrs. Neville, whoso home was recently destroyed by fire. The hostesses were Mrs. Morrin and Mrs. G. Davidson. The meeting concluded with tne singing of the National Anthem. Omaha and Pakiri.—The first meeting of the year of the Omaha and Pakiri Women's Institute was held at the Leigh Hall on February 17. Mrs. G. B. White presiding. Miss' Shepherd gave a musical monologue and also a short, addiess " Flower Culture." and offered to give a prize for sweet peas at th* flower show to be held in the spring. Mrs. Walden contributed a song, which was much appreciated. It was proposed and seconded that Miss Shepherd should represent the, institute at, the Auckland biannual conference to be held in May. In a word competition, arranged by Mrs. \ J. Mntlieson, Mrs. Hogan gained first prize and Miss Shepherd second prize. Mrs G. B. White read an interesting paper on "Diet" Mrs. Bathgate was in charge of the stall. It was arranged to hold the next meeting on Meiklejohn s Beach at Whangateau. Tea was dispensed bv the hostesses. Mesdames Gozar, Rogers, joyner and 'Miss Shepherd, the ringing of the institute song brought an enjoyable meeting to a close. Port, Albert. —On Monday, February 15. a, most enjoyable ancl instructive afternoon was held at the home of the president, Mrs. G. H. Smith. Mr. 1 ra/ford demonstrated the correct, way to disbud chrysanthemums. A scone competition was also held, Mrs. Percy Legge winning the. prize for plain scones, with Mrs. F. Reid second. Mrs. W. Winks won the fruit scone prize, Mrs. F. Broad and Mrs J. Busbridge tying for second place. Afternoon tea was served.

Raglan.—At. the meeting of the Raglan Institute an "old photograph" competition was held and cuised much amusement. and interest. It was won by Mrs. J. M. Thompson. A song by Miss Dent and a recitation by Miss V. Robertson were much appreciated. These were followed by a demonstration of making crochet mats from silk stockings by Mrs. F. Bernard. The hostesses were Mesdames Grinlinton Carpenter, Dally and Miss Dent.

Taneatua.—The monthly meeting took place last week in the Oddfellows' Lodge room. Mrs. N. Sennnens presided. A competition for the best variety of flowers was won by Mrs. Noble, Mrs. Farrell being second. It was decided to conduct a bring-and-buy stall at the next meeting, the proceeds of which will go to the institute fund. Miss Santon gave t<vo elocutionary items, which were much appreciated. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Santon, Mrs. Farrell, Mrs. McPherson and Miss Santon.

To Kowhai.—At the monthly meeting about 40 members were present to meet Mrs. Harsant, voluntary organiser of the W.F.W.1., who gave a short talk on the objects of the institute and also many practical ideas for future guidance. Great interest was taken in her demonstration of glove-making and binder-twine matmaking. Songs by Mrs. Harris, pianoforte solos by Miss Weatherley and a reading by Miss Sncll were very much enjoyed.
