IRRIGATION IN OTAGO.
WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.
INVESTIGATIONS BY ENGINEER.

The irrigation projects in North Of ago have received the support of the local bodies and the co-operation of the Public Works Department has been sought. The district engineer, Mr. T. M. Ball, arrived at Oamaru yesterday and proceeded to Steward Settlement this morning to complete arrangements preparatory to establishing a camp for 24 unemployed men, who will bo engaged clearing, repairing and enlarging fhe water race. It is estimated that the work will take two months to complete. While he ia in the district, Mr. Ball will investigate proposals for taking water to the higher levels between Georgetown and Ngapara. Questioned regarding the scheme for providing water from the dam which will be formed at Awakino when the Waitaki hydro-electric works are completed, Mr. Ball stated that it would be some time before such a scheme could be evolved, as a great amount of data was necessary in order to frame reliable estimates. At present a survey was under way and when it was completed the Department would go fully into the matter.
