UNEMPLOYED PROBLEM.
LAND DRAINAGE SCHEME. POSSIBLE TAUPIRI WORK. [from our own correspondent.] HAMILTON, Tuesday. The question whether the drainage of the Taupiri Swamp can be undertaken as an unemployed relief scheme has received tho attention of the Taupiri Drainage and River Board. The matter was discussed in committee at a meeting to-day, and it was decided that the board should meet an engineer from the Lands Drainage Department and an officer representing the Unemployment Board in Hamilton or Taupiri on Monday to consider the proposal further. TYPE OF WORK CRITICISED. OPOTIKI COMMITTEE'S PROTEST. [from our own correspondent.] OPOTIKI, Tuesday. A strong protest was made at the last meeting of the Opotiki Unemployment Committee at the apparent waste of money in employing men in weeding a borough reserve near the Waioeka Bridge, where trees have recently been planted. It was considered that far too much money had been spent on such work, when men could be better employed on more essential work. It was decided to write to the Borough Council on the matter. The committee decided to go through the list of unemployed workers to see if their financial positions warranted them receiving unemployment relief.
