GRADING OF MILK.
COMMENCING ON MARCH 1. REVIEW AT END OF SEASON. [BY TET.EGI»>T>H. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PALM2RSTON NORTH. Tuesday. Although the decision has not been gazetted, it is expected that milk grading will be introduced at dairy factories throughout the Dominion on March 1. The Director of the Dairy Division, Mr. \V. M. Singleton, told members of the Manawatu branch of the Dairy Factory Managers' Association, that the innovation would be continued until the end of the present season, when the results would be reviewed and the matter of instituting a system of differential payments, which would be held in abeyance in the meantime, would be considered.
Tho district factory managers had been invited to meet Mr. Singleton to have the proposals explained to them, and there was an attendance of about 50. Mr. Singleton explained what had been done by tho Dairy Division to ascertain the best system of milk grading from the point of view of simplicity and efficiency for both farmer and factory manager, by whom the work would be done. Tho curd test method had been decided on, and this ho explained thoroughly. The method entailed very little extra work and negligible cost to the factories. Deputations from Pahiatua and Manawatu protested at the introduction of further regulations, and expressed the desire to be excluded from their operation. Mr. Wylie, manager of the Kuku factory, said his factory had been grading milk for two years and making differential payments. There had been no trouble with the suppliers. w|,io, at the last annual meeting, voted for the continuance of the scheme. The meeting decided to co operate with the Dairy Division and to give the scheme a thorough trial for the rest of the season.
