BEACH FAILS TO IMPROVE. HOPES HELD FOR THURSDAY. [BY TF, LEG It ATII.—-SPECIAL RETORTER. ] UAITAIA, Tuesday. There was no improvement overnight in the condition of tho Ninety-Mile Bench, (lie surface still remaining patchy. 'J'iio wind continued from the south-west lo day, but the high tide again failed to make any favourable impression on the surface. In the recent long spell of calm weather sand bars formed on the seaward side of Iho racing track and local residents consider these have the effect of reducing the force of the waves to such an extent that they have little or no action on the portion of the beach nearer the sandhills. Mr. Norman Smith is still hopeful that tho high titles to-morrow and on Thursday morning will leave the beach lit for him to race upon on Thursday afternoon. No .work was dono at the garage to day most of the officials and staff spending tho time fishing. Mr. Smith can make 110 definite decision as to whether lie can race until he sees tlie beach on Thursday afternoon, so the large party at the beach will have another quiet day to-morrow. If the conditions prevent an attempt on Thursday the officials will return to Auckland before the week-end.
