LOCAL RIDERS' CONTESTS.

DAY WINS CHALLENGE MATCH

The cinder track events for local rulers at the Western Springs Speedway last evening attracted a smaller gathering than usual. The racing was less exciting and spectacular than at former meetings, when overseas riders were present, but Ihe local men gave a good performance. The track was in excellent condition and there were no serious spills. A special challenge match between F. Day, W. Coyle and C. Morgan was won by Day. The first two places in the final of the championship elimination races were gained by B. Cairns and T. Butler respectively. The Auckland Handicap was won by D. Maltson, who in the second semi-final did one lap in 19 3-ss. In another race Mattson lapped 19 4-ss. The winner of the B Grade Handicap was K. O'Brien. B. W 7 alters, who made his first appearance last evening, won the first heat of this contest and did one lap in 21 l-ss, a highly creditable time for a beginner. A well-contested race. Second Knee. —J. Cormack (Norton), 1; B. Cairns (Matt-Rudge), 2. Time, lm 22 3-ss. A fair win. Third Race.—M. Silich (Matt-Jap), 1: H. Tetley (Rudge), 2. Time, lm 23 4-ss.
