WESTERN SPRINGS EVENTS.

LOCAL RIDERS' CONTESTS.

DAY WINS CHALLENGE MATCH

The cinder track events for local rulers at the Western Springs Speedway last evening attracted a smaller gathering than usual. The racing was less exciting and spectacular than at former meetings, when overseas riders were present, but Ihe local men gave a good performance. The track was in excellent condition and there were no serious spills. A special challenge match between F. Day, W. Coyle and C. Morgan was won by Day. The first two places in the final of the championship elimination races were gained by B. Cairns and T. Butler respectively. The Auckland Handicap was won by D. Maltson, who in the second semi-final did one lap in 19 3-ss. In another race Mattson lapped 19 4-ss. The winner of the B Grade Handicap was K. O'Brien. B. W 7 alters, who made his first appearance last evening, won the first heat of this contest and did one lap in 21 l-ss, a highly creditable time for a beginner. Following are the results: — SPECIAL CHALLENGE RACE. F. Day (Norton), 1; W. Coyle (Norton), 2. Time, Ira 23 2-sa. C. Morgan was loading in the final lap, but fell, and also lost the second position. Coyle, who was dismounted in the early stages, reaching the post first. CHAMPIONSHIP ELIMINATION RACE. First Race.—T. Butler (A.J.S.), 1; C. Morgan (Norton). 2. Time, lm 22 2-os. A well-contested race. Second Knee. —J. Cormack (Norton), 1; B. Cairns (Matt-Rudge), 2. Time, lm 22 3-ss. A fair win. Third Race.—M. Silich (Matt-Jap), 1: H. Tetley (Rudge), 2. Time, lm 23 4-ss. Sihch had the race to himself, us the other nueis fell, and had to remount. Fourth Race.—W. Coyle (Norton). 1; B. Allen (Radge), 2. Time, lm 22 2-ss. A good finish. , _ . . First Semi-final.—B. Cairns (Matt-Rudge), 1; T. Butler (A.J.S.), 2. Time, lm 22 3-ss. Cairns, who drew No. 2 position, kept the lead throughout. W. Herbert fell in the early stages. t \ Second Semi-final.—M. Sihch (Matt-Jap), 1; W. Allen (Rudge), 2. Time, lm 23 4-ss. Silich, who drew No. 2 position, took the lend in the second lap and won by a comfortable margin. Coyle fell at the city end and Tetley lost to Allen in the last, lap. Final.—B. Cairns (Matt-Rudge), 1;. 1. Butler (A.J.S.), 2. Time, lm 22 2-ss. Cairns, who drew No. 2 position,, rode well and thoroughly deserved his win. bilich came in third. Allen was dismounted in the third lttP ' AUCKLAND HANDICAP.

Silich (Matt-Jnp), loyas. 1- \V Coyle (Norton), 20yds, 2. lime, lm 2Ss. Silich won by a narrow margin. First Semi-final.—B. Cairns (Matt Rudge). 15yds, 1; S. Sheppard (Rudge), 20jds, 2. Time, lm 25 4-ss. Cairns was some (listance ahead of Sheppard. T. Butler and A Way were dismounted. Second Semi-final. —D. Mattson (Isoiton). 20vds. 1; W. Coyle (Norton). 20yds. 2. lime, lm 23 3-ss. Mattson. who did one lap in 19 3-ss, was far ahead of the others for the whole of the race. Coyle was closely pursued by Allen. Silich fell m the final lap. „ .. , Final.—D.
