CUTTING OFF TELEPHONES.
FARMERS' FORCED ECONOMY. REQUEST FOR LOWER CHARGES. In view of the cancellation of many telephone subscriptions both in town and country, the Wangnnui executive of tho New Zealand Farmers' Union is asking the Post and Telegraph Department to reduce the charges for rural telephones. It was stated that in one district alone some 200 people had given up the telephone. Mr. M. Baker, in moving a motion affirming that a reduction in charges be made, said that on a Raefihi party line seven people' had contributed to its cost, but had finally been unable to pay the amount asked by the department. A request for a reduction had been refused, a deputation had met with no moro success, and later the department had taken away the telephones. He maintained that if the machines had been left in fo£ a year free of rental the. department would have gained from toll calls.
