ATTEMPTED BURGLARY.
USE OF EXPLOSIVES. HAMILTON BOROUGH OFFICES. [FROM our own correspondent.] HAMILTON", Sunday. An unsuccessful attempt to force open with gelignite the door of the strongroom in the Hamilton Borough Council offices in Victoria Street was made by burglars who entered the building on Friday evening. To muffle the sound df the explosion the intruders used a green baize curtain from the office and pieces of this, together with clay and putty, with which the lock had been plastered, were found scattered round the treasurer's room yesterday morning. The door and fittings were only slightly damaged. The burglars gained entrance by climbing a ladder and forcing a window at the rear of the building. Had attempt on the strongroom door succeeded, they would havo gained little reXvard, as the small sum of money left on the premises is always locked in the safe.
