ESCAPE FROM DROWNING.
SWEPT INTO FLOODED RIVER. AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE. [from our own correspondent. ] OPOTIKI, Saturday. A narrow escape from drowning was experienced by Mr. P. Hennessv, of Opotiki, this week, while lie was working on an East Coast road. Mr. Hennessy and his fellow-workmen were camping by a river which flooded and caused them to move. Mr. Hennessy returned to his tent to get some more of his belongings, and while ho was there, a landslip came down on the. camp. He was swept into the river and just as he was becoming exhausted, lie managed to catch hold of a willow tree and pull himself partly out of the water. Although Ill's companions were only 200 yards away they had to walk five miles to get to his rescue. Mr. Hennessy was in great pain owing to silt getting in his eyes and nose, but he :s now progressing favourably.
