BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.
QUICKSTEP COMPETITION. ST. KILDA'S SUCCESS. —1 " i [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Sunday. In spite of frequent, showers of rain and a . slippery and sodden ground, .the New Zealand band championship contest was opened with the quickstep competition at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon. There were 4000 spectators. The competition was divided into two sections, with 10 bands in the B grade and five in the A grade. St. Kilda Municipal Band won the A grade, with Port Nicholson Silver Band second? The B grade was won by .the Nelson Garrison Band, Hastings Citizens' Band being Eecond, and Oamaru Municipal Band third.' The B grade contest was held first, tha three placed bands being outstanding. Carterton Municipal was the best of the others. In the A grade all the bands marched well, although Woolston was rather disappointing. St. Hilda's performance was a very fine effort. The bands were better trained than in previous contests, with more care over details. Results:— A Grade. —St. Kilda, musical points, 74, military points, 185, total, 259; PortNicholson, 76, 0 4; Wellington Tramways, 75, Garrison, 73, 172Js, 245j; Woolston, 71, 1671 2381 B Grade. —Nelson Garrison, 64, 169, 233; Hastings Citizens', 62, 17CU, 2321; Oamaru Municipal, 68, 163], 2313; Carterton Municipal, 66, ton Municipal, 63, 1572, 2205; Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, 67, 144/,-, 211 i: Miramar Silver, 60, 151, 211; Stratford Municipal, 61, 148;,-, 209£; Dunedin City Tramways, 65, 139, 204; Christchurch Municipal, 64, 133Jj, 202j. At the Town Hall in the evening, 14 bands competed in the hymn contest for the McLeod Cup. Woolston won with an ■ excellent performance. Another good example of hvmn-playing was given by St. Kilda. Two good exhibitions given by B grade bands were those of Hastings Citizens' and Miramar. Results:— Woolston, 93 points, St. Hilda, 92; Hastings, 91; Port Nicholson', 90; Miramar, 90; Christchurch Municipal, 89; Wellington Tramways, 80; Nelson Garrison, 83; Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. 87; Masterton Municipal, 86; Oamaru Municipal, 86; Wanganui Garrison, 85; Dunedin Trams, 83; Stratford Municipal, 80.
