PORTUGUESE EXILES.

PICKED UP AT SEA. DRIFTING IN LIFEBOAT. (Received February 19, 9.45 p.m.) BAT AVI A. Feb. 19. Among the nine Portuguese exiles who escaped in a boat from internment at Dilly, Timor Island, and were picked up yesterday were the former Colonial Minister of Portugal, a military captain and lieutenant, a police commissioner, a nephew of the present President of the Portuguese Republic, an airman, a journalist and a navy captain. The men were picked up at midnightdrifting in the lifeboat in mid-ocean. The crew of the Australian schooner Jewasunye rescued them. The exiles said they had been rowing for hours to get outside territorial waters. They were handed over to the captain of the Dutch steamer Van Riebeeck, who asked them to return to Dilly, but they refused and asked for the protection of the Dutch flag. The Dutch captain took them to the Sunda Isles. Upon arrival at Koepang the authorities examined their identification papers, which were found to be correct. The Van Riebeeck is expected at Java on February 25.
