RELIEF IN THE CITY.

SISTER ESTHER'S WORK. The difficulties to be contended with in the work of distributing relief under the present conditions existing in Auckland is referred to in the report of the work done in this direction during the month of January by Sister Esther and her helpers. "Afc least three and a-half hours daily are spent in interviewing applicants for relief, and tho remainder of the day in visiting and investigating cases," the report states. "In all our experience we have never known such want as at tho present time. Tho difficulty is that each one sees only his own needs and those of his household. We are thankful to got through the days without discord .'' More and more men were applying for relief for their families and were much more forceful and difficult to contend with than the women. "They come to us because it is easier to obtain assistance from our depot than from tho Hospital Board. Many think they are entitled to relief work, rations from the Hospital Board and food from us," tho report states. During the month of January 581 parcels of provisions were given out, 376 of clothing, and relief in money to 321 people. A good supply of vegetables was being received and two cases of nectarines had arrived from Hastings.
