Sir, —I notice that on two occasions this week steamers have been held up at Auckland owing to disputes with the crew, the latest being Marama. It seems to mo no wonder that the prestige of the British Mercantile Marine is held in very poor esteem and it will be interesting to see if the Mariposa is detained hero by her American crew on Monday next. I am inclined to think that New Zea.<land seamen are playing into the hands of the Americans every day, as the British shipowner has no clwince of maintaining schedule date while British seamen are employed.
