SYDNEY'S HARBOUR BRIDGE

UNCERTAINTY OF FUTURE. FATE OF THE STEAMERS. Residents of the north side of the Sydney Harbour may eventually enjoy the sympathy of people of other States rather than their envy. The Harbour Bridge, which is exciting the attention of the world, is occasioning much worry. Doubts and fears concerning the cost of crossing the bridge are oppressive. The complete tale has yet to be told. A correspondent says:—"At present residents of the North Shore reach the city by a line of ferry steamers which for 50 years has given excellent and cheap service. They expected that after March 19 they would have the option of crossing the harbour by bridge or steamer, but the probabilities are thai they will be compelled to cross the bridge and to pay whatever the Transport Co-ordination Board chooses to ask. "It has lately become apparent- that Sydney Ferries, Limited, the company which caters for the residents of North Sydney, was capable of rendering further service. The initial statement of the cost of crossing the bridge influenced some alert speculators to inquire for the cost of shares in the ferry eomnany. They could see that the steamers would be in demand. "The Transport Board has not yet made any announcement, but it is believed that the board will not permit the steamers to compete seriously with the bridge. The board has the power to suspend the ferry service, just as it wiped out the bus services which competed with the tramways and the railways.
