PRISONER RECAPTURED.

CUDBY FOUND AT MANGERE. CALLS AT HOUSE FOR FOOD. NO RESISTANCE OFFERED. After being at liberty since early on Wednesday morning, when ho escaped from the custody of a warder while undergoing treatment at the Auckland Hospital, the prisoner, Roy George Cudby, aged 29, was recaptured at the back of a house in Nixon Road, Mangere, about 10 o'clock yesterday morning. He was in a weak state, and submitted quietly to arrest, it being apparent that his eye, which had been operated on in hospital on Sunday, was in a bad condition. There was no trace of Cudby from the time of his escape until Thursday evening, when he was seen in Hepburn Street, Ponsonby. lie apparently left tho city a short time afterward and called at a house in Pukaki Road, Mangere, occupied by Mr. F. Golledge, about 11 p.m. Mr. Colledge was awakened by a noise in the kitchen and on making an investigation found a man whom he recognised as Cudby prowling about tho cupboards. After ho had been given a piece of bread the prisoner was sent away frorii the house. As Mr. Colledge's wife did not wish to be left alone in tho house Mr. Colledge was unable to go to the post of lice store to communicate with tho police. Later, Cudby called at the house of Mr. J. Wilson, where he asked for a meal and a bed, but was refused. Ho then called at the house of Mr. S. Stoupe, where lie was discovered in the kitchen. He was not recognised and was given accommodation and breakfast. Between 8.30 and 9 o'clock yesterday morning Cudby was seen walking along Westney Road, Mangere, the fact being | reported to the police, and at the same time Mr. Colledge reported tho previous night's incident. Within a short time a force of about 12 men was despatched to the district. A message was also sent to Mangere aerodrome stating that Cudby was in the district. A machine piloted bv Lieutenant D. M. Allan flew low over the area where Cudby was believed to be, but the fugitive was not j sighted. ~ About 10 o'clock Cudby was captured by Sergeant Browrt in the yard at the back of a house in Nixon Itoad. owned by a Chinese market gardener, where lie was talking to an elderly Maori woman. Cudby. who made no resistance, staled be had suffered intense pain through the removal of his eye. Ho was in a weak state and said he had obtained little food since his escape. When he was real rested Cudby was wearing a brown tweed overcoat, an old cap, dungaree trousers and a grey coat. He also had a pair of leggings. His eye was not bandaged, and was in a bad condition. In his possession was a small amount of cash. When he appeared in the Police Court later in the morning his eye was bandaged. He was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond in that he escaped from custody, and on the application of the police was remanded for a week.
