GRAMMAR SCHOOL PUPILS.

DECREASED ATTENDANCES. MORE POST-MATRICULATION. A study of tho total roll numbers of pupils at the Auckland Grammar Schools this year shows that in each case there has been a decrease, in both new and old pupils attending the schools. Tho figures are given in comparison with those of 1931, and i(, is obvious that the severity of the times has been responsible for the increased number of postmatriculation pupils who have returned for another year. Tlie totals will be augmented to some extent by the decision of the Minister of Education, the Hon. R. Masters, to extend junior froe places for another year to all those junior pupils who have had the position for two years, artd had failed in the senior free place examinations. Up to the present there has been no noticeable increase, but the decision was not announced until this week. In the following table the top figures are for 1931, and the bottom figures for 1932:—

The post-matriculation figures are included in the number of old pupils.
