RAILWAY ECONOMIES.
BRANCH LINE TRAFFIC. HOPES OF THE BOARD. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISXCHURCH, Friday. . Commenting on the railway accounts for the nine months to January 2, which show a decline in revenue of £904,000 and a reduction in expenditure of £971,000, Mr. P. G. Roussell, general manager of railways, said the aim of the board waa by ceaseless investigation to explore every avenue of economy as long as it d:d not affect the efficiency of the service to the public or the usual high standards of safety. As for branch lines, the board was anxious to keep every line open that would pay operating expenses. The board would be guided by the position as disclosed at the ond of the financial year.
